Research and Plannng

Planning of Magazine cover

Above are the photos that were taken during in our photoshoot for our magazine cover. We tried to take them on a plain background to ensure they look more professional. We stood in different angles and ways to ensure that we got the best end photo for our magazine cover.

This is the magazine cover used to promote our film. It is the cover of a very popular magazine cover 'Total Film'. This will create a lot of publicity for our film as this is a popular and respected film magazine cover. If our film is an item on the front page of this magazine this means that the magazine think this film is good as they would not want to promote a bad film as that might put their publicity at risk. The photo that will be used is two of the main characters. These will be dressed up like models so they just look like the actresses this is because these two actresses are the faces of the film so they will be associated with our film. On the right hand side we are told things that are in the magazine such as the part where our film is featured. It says EXCLUSIVE in bold writing to catch the readers attention, then we are told what will be included. On the left hand side the reader is told about other interesting items featured in the magazine. These are used so the reader is attracted to read on.

Planning of film poster

These photos above were taken for our film poster. We took them in the setting, by a graffti wall this to show the surroundings that the characters live in. The characters are shown against the wall. We made the characters sit naturual to ensure that did not look like they were posing for a photo but it looked like they were just hanging around in their local area. We took lots of different photos to ensure we got the best final photo for our film poster.

This is a sketch of the film poster used for the promotion of our film. We have used a quote from a film magazine at the top this is to attract a wider audience as we want the audience to be reasurred that this film is a good film. We have also give the rating that the film magazine gave. For our film empire gave it five stars. The background of the poster will be the image of the the main characters. This is a indication of what the film is about and helps the audience to identify each character as they are the faces of this film. Also within the image is the title of the film which is B36. This is written in graffti on the wall this is so it stands out and also is a indication of what the film is about ( a high crime area.) This will be written in red to stand out. Underneath each character is the actors name this is to make sure the audience know who is starring in the film and also can make the film more popular as popular stars will bring a wider audience. This will also be written in bold letters as it needs to stand out so viewer can see it clearer. We will include the date of release as this gives the audience a date for when they can go and watch it. This will also stand out very clearly as its a very important information about the film.

Storyboard

This is the storyboard that has been used for my film trailer. I have included still images from the filming to show each shot. It also says how long each shot is for and what non digetic and digetic sound is heard alongside the shot. It also tells us what is seen within the shot such as the mise en scene. It is also tells us the camera angles, movements that are used within that scene.

target audience

The target audience for social realism films can be anyone as it depends on the situation the characters are in in the film as the audience are able to relate to the characters if they are in the same situation. Often based on class the target audience would usually be a working class one as they are able to relate to the characters in the film and have experienced their struggles at first hand. However having said this a middle class audience might enjoy this to as they may have been through some struggle or they may just find it fascinating on how working class people live.
My production B36 is set on a council estate and is about four teenage girls trying to e enjoy life and being frustrated by the situation that they are in. I feel that the target audience for my production would have to be a young audience say teenagers to early twenties as they may have experienced this kind of situation and are able to relate. However the target audience cant be too young as there is use of drugs, swearing and some sexual scenes. Therefore it will be certificated 15 to ensure that the content of our film doesn't upset or effect anyone of a younger age. My film may also appeal to girls as they are able to relate to the characters as they are girls. People from a council estate may also be appealed to the film as they can relate more to.

job roles

Sheryl Richards played one of the characters within our trailer. She had to show an abusive character, but also a worried character as she played a girl who was pregnant and was worried what to do. Sheryls character was someone that put on a front in her friends presence but when we saw her on her own she was actually very vunerable and scared about her situation. Sheryl played her role effectively and was also a big help to our production.

Bobbi Doyle played a big part within our trailer. She performed well as she had the biggest acting part. Bobbi had to act as the gang leader, who threw abuse at the neighbourhood and pushed drugs on to other characters. She did a good job of acting confident and loud as a gang leader would. Bobbi was very confident herself and portrayed a character that was very important in our trailer. She was a great use to our production.

Sarah is my group partner. Her job roles consisted of planning and researching to make sure our trailer, magazine cover and film poster were effective in their job. Sarah is also very artistic, so her role was to produce the film poster and magazine cover as she was able to see the most effective way of attracting an audience. She did a really good job and presented the magazine cover and poster in which made them appealing and made them look realistic and persuasive. She used effective font and colours. Another job that Sarah had was a actor as she played a main character, who was going through alot of peer pressure and was self harming. She played this part really well and portrayed the characters emotions effectively.

Me, Melissa Doyle My main job when producing this film trailer, magzine cover and poster was to plan and research the things in which will be included and how as we as a group were going create a social realism film trailer, and create alongside a film poster and film magazine cover. I feel I did this sufficently and everything went well and to plan. Another job role I had was to be camera operator, I feel that I did the best I could and tried to use my knowledge about the meaning of certain camera angles, movement and shots to portray the meaning of the trailer. However I feel I could have imporved this as some of the work was shakey and my camera shots could have been more effective. I also edited the trailer and tried to include the best bits of our fotage and create excitement and creativity, to appeal to the audience. I also starred as one of the characters, I was one of the troubled teens who has got involved in knife crime and in the clip you see my character taking a knife from the kitchen.

shots list

The shots list shows all the different camera shots, angles and movements that will be shown within our trailer. This again gives guidence to the camera operator. Camera shots, angles and movements are very important when filming as they them self can portray meanings for the audience. Even if the creators of the film did not mean to give a certain portrayal to the audience this may still happen as the audience may still make their own personal meaning of a certain camera movement. This is why the camera operator needs be careful and precise in their work as they may give the wrong meaning to the audience or may not portray a meaning as effectively as they aimed to.

Shooting scripts

These are the shooting scripts for each day that we filmed. This shows the locations we used in day 1 of filming the dialogue that was used, and camera directions. This is so the director and the camera operator are able to stick to the ways in which the scenes should look. These are ways of keeping the filming more organised and giving the crew guidance.

Script

This is the script in which we will er use when filming our trailer. We have had to put the script in the order of the clips that will show in the trailer. We have introduced each different seen with stage directions, to ensure the director is telling the actors the right place to stand and we film in the right location. We have also included on the script the lines in which each character will say. There is quite alot of swearing and abusive language. This is because we are trying to portray the frustration that these teenage girls suffer from coming from a socially deprived background and always being the subject to social inequality. Each character has their own problem they have to face within the film and we are trying to show a snippet of that in the trailer so the audience get a feel of the conventions in this film. If they are able to spot the conventions they will then be able to see that the gerne of the film is social realism and then the trailer will appeal to them as it is their preffered genre. We have also put in the script the clips in which we do not show or hear a character but we show things such as the area and drugs. As these are other important conventions of a social realism film.

Primary research

We conducted a questionnaire about film trailers to find out what consumers found effective within a trailer and what they found was ineffective in a trailer. We handed them out to around thirty people within our target audience and found out what they like. This is part of research which will enable us to get the best media product we can for our target audience and to appeal to them in the most effective way.

Our results came to show very useful opinions that we will listen to when producing our trailer. In this pie chart we can see that our target audience prefer the music to be parrellel to the trailer. This has gave us support in our decision to make the music parrellel within our trailer.

We also asked the question of where do you view most trailers. As you can see in the bar chart, our target audience mainly watched trailers in the cinema while going to watch another film. They also watched them on the television and rarely watched them on the internet. This gave us useful information as the main times when our target audience see a trailer is when they are busy watching other things, such as films or television programmes. This means we will show our trailer the most in times in which other social realism films are being viewed or soaps or dramas are being shown on the television. This is to ensure our target audience are able to view our trailer most effectively.

Another question that was asked in our questionnaire is what is our target audiences favourite gerne. From our results we have found that comedy was the most popular. I feel this is because comedy makes you feel good and is a scapegoat for the audience as it makes consumers forget about their own problems within life and enjoy, laugh and relax. However the second most popular genre of film is social realism which is good for us as we are using the gerne of social realism. I feel that the reason this is one of the most popular genres is because it helps audiences to understand those less fortunate than them and understand issues that happen in today's society. it also helps the audience to relate to issues that are shown within social realism films. This makes consumers feel better about their own lifes as they don't have it as bad or it makes them feelas ease as they feel that they are not the only one in that situation an their problem is being recognised.

We also asked the target audience what pace do they prefer the trailer to be. The feedback we got was that generally the audience preferred the trailer to be fast. This is probably because the audience like to feel excited and anxious about the film, so it makes them really want to go and watch it to find out what is going to happen.

location

This the area we chose to do our film in. It is located in Bromford Birmingham. We chose this area as the setting as it is a council estate, which is a deprived area. As our trailer is a film with the gerne of social realism, this deprived area is the ideal place. The aim of our film is to show others how people from socially deprived areas are affected by their trapped status. Our film trys to capture the problems faced by people and the realisation that they face everyday. The area is good for this as it can be easily spotted by the surroundings that this is a deprived area. For example there is lots of rubbish, litter, graffti, damaged property, council houses, high rised flats, also there is a few signs the area placed their by the police aimed to warn the public of the crime within the area. (see above) This provides our trailer with effective mise en scene. For all these reasons I believe that this location is the best setting for our trailer. The house we use within the trailer is actually a council masanette within the area of filming. So this also fits the theme that we are trying to create and shows more of the socially deprived.

call sheets

These are the call sheets that we used for the two days that it took us to film the trailer. On day one we had no actors and just filmed the setting and tryed to get as many conventions into our filming as possible. For example we filmed the scene in which we see drugs and alcohol. We also filmed the area and used parts of the area such as a graffti wall and a flat that is being knocked down, we also captured bits of rubbish and items dumped on the street.
On the second day of filming we had all on the actorson set. They had to change into different clothes to make sure the trailer looked effective as the scences had to be from totally different parts of the film. We filmed scenes in which the characters had to intereact with each other and show lots of different emotions that were shown throughout the film.

Mindmap

This is a mind map of the intiatial ideas that we had for the trailer it includes what conventions we will use as part of the social realism gerne with a gangsta hybrid. These include things such as peer pressure, violence, prosmiscuity, drugs, gang culture, crime and weapons. The reason we use the conventions of the genre in our trailer is so we can appeal to our target audience. They will recognise the conventions and therefore will like it and it will appeal them as social realism films with a gangsta hybrid was the gerne of films that they have really enjoyed in the past.
We have also included the setting. It will be set in a council estate in Birmingham. This shows how deprived the area is that the character lives in. this shows how difficult life can be for teenagers that come from a deprived background and the sorts of issues that can take place within their life. The lighting will be high key to make it look natural and realistic. This is good as our gerne is social realism and is trying to portray real life situations. The dialogue will be the restricted code as this is the main language code that working class individuals use. There will also be alot of swearing and abusive language as this will show the characters frustration at their life situations and the lack of life chances they have. The sound used will be things such as dialogue and non digetic music as the music will be a big indicator of what the film is about as it is rap music talking about street life. The make up that will be used will be quite heavy as these are teenage girls who like to hide themselves away and look their best. They where casual clothing as it needs to be real to life and gold jewellery, this is to reflect what teenagers are wearing in society today.
