I noticed after analysing other existing social realism trailers that my trailer used the same conventions as it displayed the themes within the film effectively. Within my trailer the audience are able to see that it is set on a council estate from the location shots at the beginning. It is also made clear by the titles of what the themes are such as drugs, alcohol,
pregnancy, crime, abusive behaviour and other key social realism themes. These are also assisted by shots within the trailer such as the shot where the girls are dancing and
taking drugs.pregnancy, crime, abusive behaviour and other key social realism themes. These are also assisted by shots within the trailer such as the shot where the girls are dancing and
These themes are carried across the poster as it shows the main characters hanging around the street, sitting in front of a wall with graffiti. The poster ties well together with the trailer and also provides publicity for the film.
However the magazine cover challenged the conventions of a social realism film as the characters are seen in dresses. This is because the magazine cover is more about the actors rather than the characters this is to create publicity through the faces of the actors.
According to Barthes enigma code any text whether it is a film, television programme or poster should portray a sense of mystery to draw an audience in and pose a question this is so the audience become intrigued in the piece. I have used this in my trailer as i have posed the question what is the storyline within the film? We created this question by showing the audience all the things that appeals them to the film by showing the different themes of a social realism film. This therefore attracts the right audience as it attracts the fans of social realism films. However while the themes draw the audience in, the trailer doesn't give too much away so this makes the audience intrigued in what is going to happen in the film so then they go and watch the film. Meaning the trailer gives our film great publicity.
My media product challenges the conventions of a social realism film as we use females as the main characters. This subverts the conventions as the characters that are portrayed within the trailer would usually be male. The girls have very masculine characters we see this as they use weapons, throw abuse at their neighbours, they wear quite masculine clothes and they swear and aren't very pleasant. We did this as we didn't want to be stereotypical towards males or females. Another problem with my media product is it didn't include any ethnic minorities. Critics would criticised my product majorly for this. However the reason i did this is because often ethnic minorities are portrayed in a negative way within the media with things such as crime and drug use. Although I did this I could have portrayed the ethnic minority groups in a positive way to come away from this stigma.
How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary texts?
My trailer fits well together with my film poster as they carry certain things across each one, such as the costume that the characters wear. Also the characters are sitting in front of a wall that is also shown within the trailer. Which has graffiti on it which is the title of the film B36. This image of the wall instantly creates a link between the two. This creates synergy for the film as these are the ways in which publicity is created for the film.
Another way in which publicity is created for the film is the magazine cover. However this doesn't tie in as well with the poster and the trailer as it doesn't portray the genre of the film as well as the other two do. This is because the magazine cover focuses on the face of the actors to gain publicity for the film. For example if the actor is popular then that creates publicity for the film as all the fans of the actor will be interested in watching that film. After looking at other films this is the same for them.
For example the film poster and magazine cover for the film transforms has the same effect as my product as the film poster for transformers focuses on the attractiveness of the main actress of Megan Fox.
What have you learnt from your audience feedback?
It is important to get audience feedback about a media product in order to see how things can be improved when constructing a new media product. So criticism can be a good thing and feedback can also show the positive factors about the media product. The ways in which i obtained audience feedback was by conducting interviews, questionnaires and recording individuals opinions on our product.
Here is an example of one of the videos which shows the opinions of the audience.
How did use media technologies in the construction and research, planning and evaluation stages?
In every part of the making of our media product we used media technologies to help us along the way. Throughout the whole of my A2 coursework i used the website blogger to present my work on. This was useful as this site can be viewed by anyone in order to create more publicity for my media product and to show how i came about with the idea and how i planned it. This also made it easier for my teachers and me to access as i could access it anywhere. This means that it can also be shared with other students to ensure that i am guided within my work and it also provides feedback as others can comment on my work. www.blogger.com
I used a video cameras to construct the film trailer and to film the feedback from the audience of our trailer which has been shown in the earlier evaluation question. I used 'pinnacle' an editing programme to edit the trailer and fit the clips together. I included titles, transitions and and music to ensure that it included aspects of a realistic trailer. I downloaded the music from http://www.soundcloud.com/ this was suggested to me by a friend who actually wrote and produced the song as my trailer was a way of publicising his song. The titles along with the song aimed to represent what the trailer was about.
I used a digital camera to take photos for the film poster and the magazine cover. I used 'Photo shop' to produce the film poster by changing the constrast so the graffiti on the wall stood out more. I also added a quote and the actresses names. i used publisher in order to create the magazine cover, by using publisher i was able to add text to make it more appealing i could also add more images.
Throughout the whole of making of my media product i used Google images as i was able to analyse other film posters, such as Kidulthood and This is England and magazine covers, such as empire and total film. I also used http://www.youtube.com/ within my research in order to analyse other trailers and identify what was expected from my film trailer, such as kidulthood. Google maps was also used within the planning as i needed to show pictures of the location of where the trailer is set and shot. Microsoft word was used alot within the planning for things such as call sheets, scripts, shooting scripts, shots lists, props lists and storyboard. Within my evaluation i used video shots for audience feedback, google images and screen shots of important parts of my trailer that i analysed. An element I found easy to explain comparisons was an Internet formatting programme called, http://www.slideshare.com/ this enabled 'Microsoft PowerPoint Presentations' to be uploaded on to 'Blogger'- giving more interactive method to explaining and evaluating my work. Without these technologies the making of my media product would not be possible.
