Research and Plannng

Planning of Magazine cover

Above are the photos that were taken during in our photoshoot for our magazine cover. We tried to take them on a plain background to ensure they look more professional. We stood in different angles and ways to ensure that we got the best end photo for our magazine cover.

This is the magazine cover used to promote our film. It is the cover of a very popular magazine cover 'Total Film'. This will create a lot of publicity for our film as this is a popular and respected film magazine cover. If our film is an item on the front page of this magazine this means that the magazine think this film is good as they would not want to promote a bad film as that might put their publicity at risk. The photo that will be used is two of the main characters. These will be dressed up like models so they just look like the actresses this is because these two actresses are the faces of the film so they will be associated with our film. On the right hand side we are told things that are in the magazine such as the part where our film is featured. It says EXCLUSIVE in bold writing to catch the readers attention, then we are told what will be included. On the left hand side the reader is told about other interesting items featured in the magazine. These are used so the reader is attracted to read on.

Planning of film poster

These photos above were taken for our film poster. We took them in the setting, by a graffti wall this to show the surroundings that the characters live in. The characters are shown against the wall. We made the characters sit naturual to ensure that did not look like they were posing for a photo but it looked like they were just hanging around in their local area. We took lots of different photos to ensure we got the best final photo for our film poster.

This is a sketch of the film poster used for the promotion of our film. We have used a quote from a film magazine at the top this is to attract a wider audience as we want the audience to be reasurred that this film is a good film. We have also give the rating that the film magazine gave. For our film empire gave it five stars. The background of the poster will be the image of the the main characters. This is a indication of what the film is about and helps the audience to identify each character as they are the faces of this film. Also within the image is the title of the film which is B36. This is written in graffti on the wall this is so it stands out and also is a indication of what the film is about ( a high crime area.) This will be written in red to stand out. Underneath each character is the actors name this is to make sure the audience know who is starring in the film and also can make the film more popular as popular stars will bring a wider audience. This will also be written in bold letters as it needs to stand out so viewer can see it clearer. We will include the date of release as this gives the audience a date for when they can go and watch it. This will also stand out very clearly as its a very important information about the film.

Storyboard

This is the storyboard that has been used for my film trailer. I have included still images from the filming to show each shot. It also says how long each shot is for and what non digetic and digetic sound is heard alongside the shot. It also tells us what is seen within the shot such as the mise en scene. It is also tells us the camera angles, movements that are used within that scene.

target audience

The target audience for social realism films can be anyone as it depends on the situation the characters are in in the film as the audience are able to relate to the characters if they are in the same situation. Often based on class the target audience would usually be a working class one as they are able to relate to the characters in the film and have experienced their struggles at first hand. However having said this a middle class audience might enjoy this to as they may have been through some struggle or they may just find it fascinating on how working class people live.
My production B36 is set on a council estate and is about four teenage girls trying to e enjoy life and being frustrated by the situation that they are in. I feel that the target audience for my production would have to be a young audience say teenagers to early twenties as they may have experienced this kind of situation and are able to relate. However the target audience cant be too young as there is use of drugs, swearing and some sexual scenes. Therefore it will be certificated 15 to ensure that the content of our film doesn't upset or effect anyone of a younger age. My film may also appeal to girls as they are able to relate to the characters as they are girls. People from a council estate may also be appealed to the film as they can relate more to.

job roles

Sheryl Richards played one of the characters within our trailer. She had to show an abusive character, but also a worried character as she played a girl who was pregnant and was worried what to do. Sheryls character was someone that put on a front in her friends presence but when we saw her on her own she was actually very vunerable and scared about her situation. Sheryl played her role effectively and was also a big help to our production.

Bobbi Doyle played a big part within our trailer. She performed well as she had the biggest acting part. Bobbi had to act as the gang leader, who threw abuse at the neighbourhood and pushed drugs on to other characters. She did a good job of acting confident and loud as a gang leader would. Bobbi was very confident herself and portrayed a character that was very important in our trailer. She was a great use to our production.

Sarah is my group partner. Her job roles consisted of planning and researching to make sure our trailer, magazine cover and film poster were effective in their job. Sarah is also very artistic, so her role was to produce the film poster and magazine cover as she was able to see the most effective way of attracting an audience. She did a really good job and presented the magazine cover and poster in which made them appealing and made them look realistic and persuasive. She used effective font and colours. Another job that Sarah had was a actor as she played a main character, who was going through alot of peer pressure and was self harming. She played this part really well and portrayed the characters emotions effectively.

Me, Melissa Doyle My main job when producing this film trailer, magzine cover and poster was to plan and research the things in which will be included and how as we as a group were going create a social realism film trailer, and create alongside a film poster and film magazine cover. I feel I did this sufficently and everything went well and to plan. Another job role I had was to be camera operator, I feel that I did the best I could and tried to use my knowledge about the meaning of certain camera angles, movement and shots to portray the meaning of the trailer. However I feel I could have imporved this as some of the work was shakey and my camera shots could have been more effective. I also edited the trailer and tried to include the best bits of our fotage and create excitement and creativity, to appeal to the audience. I also starred as one of the characters, I was one of the troubled teens who has got involved in knife crime and in the clip you see my character taking a knife from the kitchen.

shots list

The shots list shows all the different camera shots, angles and movements that will be shown within our trailer. This again gives guidence to the camera operator. Camera shots, angles and movements are very important when filming as they them self can portray meanings for the audience. Even if the creators of the film did not mean to give a certain portrayal to the audience this may still happen as the audience may still make their own personal meaning of a certain camera movement. This is why the camera operator needs be careful and precise in their work as they may give the wrong meaning to the audience or may not portray a meaning as effectively as they aimed to.

Shooting scripts

These are the shooting scripts for each day that we filmed. This shows the locations we used in day 1 of filming the dialogue that was used, and camera directions. This is so the director and the camera operator are able to stick to the ways in which the scenes should look. These are ways of keeping the filming more organised and giving the crew guidance.

Script

This is the script in which we will er use when filming our trailer. We have had to put the script in the order of the clips that will show in the trailer. We have introduced each different seen with stage directions, to ensure the director is telling the actors the right place to stand and we film in the right location. We have also included on the script the lines in which each character will say. There is quite alot of swearing and abusive language. This is because we are trying to portray the frustration that these teenage girls suffer from coming from a socially deprived background and always being the subject to social inequality. Each character has their own problem they have to face within the film and we are trying to show a snippet of that in the trailer so the audience get a feel of the conventions in this film. If they are able to spot the conventions they will then be able to see that the gerne of the film is social realism and then the trailer will appeal to them as it is their preffered genre. We have also put in the script the clips in which we do not show or hear a character but we show things such as the area and drugs. As these are other important conventions of a social realism film.

Primary research

We conducted a questionnaire about film trailers to find out what consumers found effective within a trailer and what they found was ineffective in a trailer. We handed them out to around thirty people within our target audience and found out what they like. This is part of research which will enable us to get the best media product we can for our target audience and to appeal to them in the most effective way.

Our results came to show very useful opinions that we will listen to when producing our trailer. In this pie chart we can see that our target audience prefer the music to be parrellel to the trailer. This has gave us support in our decision to make the music parrellel within our trailer.

We also asked the question of where do you view most trailers. As you can see in the bar chart, our target audience mainly watched trailers in the cinema while going to watch another film. They also watched them on the television and rarely watched them on the internet. This gave us useful information as the main times when our target audience see a trailer is when they are busy watching other things, such as films or television programmes. This means we will show our trailer the most in times in which other social realism films are being viewed or soaps or dramas are being shown on the television. This is to ensure our target audience are able to view our trailer most effectively.

Another question that was asked in our questionnaire is what is our target audiences favourite gerne. From our results we have found that comedy was the most popular. I feel this is because comedy makes you feel good and is a scapegoat for the audience as it makes consumers forget about their own problems within life and enjoy, laugh and relax. However the second most popular genre of film is social realism which is good for us as we are using the gerne of social realism. I feel that the reason this is one of the most popular genres is because it helps audiences to understand those less fortunate than them and understand issues that happen in today's society. it also helps the audience to relate to issues that are shown within social realism films. This makes consumers feel better about their own lifes as they don't have it as bad or it makes them feelas ease as they feel that they are not the only one in that situation an their problem is being recognised.

We also asked the target audience what pace do they prefer the trailer to be. The feedback we got was that generally the audience preferred the trailer to be fast. This is probably because the audience like to feel excited and anxious about the film, so it makes them really want to go and watch it to find out what is going to happen.

location

This the area we chose to do our film in. It is located in Bromford Birmingham. We chose this area as the setting as it is a council estate, which is a deprived area. As our trailer is a film with the gerne of social realism, this deprived area is the ideal place. The aim of our film is to show others how people from socially deprived areas are affected by their trapped status. Our film trys to capture the problems faced by people and the realisation that they face everyday. The area is good for this as it can be easily spotted by the surroundings that this is a deprived area. For example there is lots of rubbish, litter, graffti, damaged property, council houses, high rised flats, also there is a few signs the area placed their by the police aimed to warn the public of the crime within the area. (see above) This provides our trailer with effective mise en scene. For all these reasons I believe that this location is the best setting for our trailer. The house we use within the trailer is actually a council masanette within the area of filming. So this also fits the theme that we are trying to create and shows more of the socially deprived.

call sheets

These are the call sheets that we used for the two days that it took us to film the trailer. On day one we had no actors and just filmed the setting and tryed to get as many conventions into our filming as possible. For example we filmed the scene in which we see drugs and alcohol. We also filmed the area and used parts of the area such as a graffti wall and a flat that is being knocked down, we also captured bits of rubbish and items dumped on the street.
On the second day of filming we had all on the actorson set. They had to change into different clothes to make sure the trailer looked effective as the scences had to be from totally different parts of the film. We filmed scenes in which the characters had to intereact with each other and show lots of different emotions that were shown throughout the film.

Mindmap

This is a mind map of the intiatial ideas that we had for the trailer it includes what conventions we will use as part of the social realism gerne with a gangsta hybrid. These include things such as peer pressure, violence, prosmiscuity, drugs, gang culture, crime and weapons. The reason we use the conventions of the genre in our trailer is so we can appeal to our target audience. They will recognise the conventions and therefore will like it and it will appeal them as social realism films with a gangsta hybrid was the gerne of films that they have really enjoyed in the past.
We have also included the setting. It will be set in a council estate in Birmingham. This shows how deprived the area is that the character lives in. this shows how difficult life can be for teenagers that come from a deprived background and the sorts of issues that can take place within their life. The lighting will be high key to make it look natural and realistic. This is good as our gerne is social realism and is trying to portray real life situations. The dialogue will be the restricted code as this is the main language code that working class individuals use. There will also be alot of swearing and abusive language as this will show the characters frustration at their life situations and the lack of life chances they have. The sound used will be things such as dialogue and non digetic music as the music will be a big indicator of what the film is about as it is rap music talking about street life. The make up that will be used will be quite heavy as these are teenage girls who like to hide themselves away and look their best. They where casual clothing as it needs to be real to life and gold jewellery, this is to reflect what teenagers are wearing in society today.

Case study: The dark Knight.

I have chosen to analyse The Dark Knight as it is a very popular film. Which created alot of publicity. I want to discover how this film did this so i can make my film just as successful.

This film poster is very dark and dim it shows the villian in the film to be standing what almost looks like frosted glass. This creates a sense of mystery as we aren't really able to see his face in much detail. He is standing in a black coat with a bright light behind him this also creates more mystery. At the bottom of the film poster is the name of the film and its logo which is a bat this resembles batman and indicates that this is a batman film. The most interesting part of this poster is the catch line from the film which is 'why so serious?' This is shown to be the most important part of the poster as it written in the jokers blood from his mouth. This indicates to me that ther is something about the storyline in the film is important about the jokers mouth. It also makes me think that the catch line of the film made it popular and have alot of publicity.
The magazine cover i am anaylsing for the dark knight comes from Entertainment. On this magazine cover there is a dark background which carries on the theme of the mystery.
Within the picture is the two main characters this gives publicity to the film as they are both big stars who are good actors however they are dressed up as their charcaters. They are different ends of the picture frame. This shows that there is a rivialary. Both of the characters look like they could kill the other. This means that they are in character within the picture. This shows what the tension will be like in the film. The text on the magazine cover falls between the two characters. It says ' BATMAN TRAGEDY AND TRIUMPH. below that it talks about the death of Heath Ledger, it tells us about his brillian performance within the film. It is written in bold and bright writting to attract the audience to read it and be interested in the film.
The trailer for the dark knight starts with a very dark long shot of the film with the main character Batman, standing on the roof of a building. We then get a birdseye view of the city, which then pans to the building in which Batman is standing. We then get another birdseye view of the city from batmans point of view and it shows him falling from this building. This introduces the main character in some way, he doesn't need to be introduced in detail as batman is an iconic character that most of the audience with already recognise. This makes the film have some publicity from start before the trailer is even saw. As batman gets near the bottom we see blue flames with the production team logo within these flames. This introduces the production team but also keeps the dark and mysterious theme. The non-digetic music is one that is parrell to the trailer as it builds up tension for the viewers. There is then a sound bridge of the jokers voice and see the building in broad daylight. We are then shown the characters within the film with the jokers voice as the sound bridge over a number of clips. This shows that the joker is an important character and one that may help promote the film. The music gets more tense and we are shown some action with a car driving through a window, this shows the audience that it is an action packed film so therefore this aspect of the film will appeal to a certain type of audience. We can see from the clips following that the joker is an iconic character as we see alot of him within the trailer and he stands out because his voice, mannerisms, and make up. we are also shown an explosion this also appeals to a certain audience who likes action. The edititng picks up a faster pace but then begins to slow down as the joker is shown walking down the street with a knife in his hand and he says in a sound bridge to the next cut where we see his face 'here we go' then the edititng pace picks up again. The action shown within the clips builds up a storyline that appeals to the audience. It is like it is a quick overview of the film shown by little snippets of the film. The editing gets quicker again where the clips are shown in a flash, this builds up tension and excitment for the audience to want to watch the film. The trailer uses non- digetic music that also builds up tension. Throughout the trailer we also hear characters saying quotes out of the film. This also just gives an insight into the different characters. The non-digetic music then hits its peak of tension and we are shown the film title.

Research into chosen genre: social realism.

Social realism is a genre that explores the life styles and experiences of certain groups in society. This can be certain social classes, subcultures. Social realism films are films such as, kidulthood, adulthood, full Monty, brassed off, a kind of loving. These films show everyday situations for different groups in society, they show the situations people are put in throughout life. The problem that people have with social realism films is that they give a negative representation of people in that group. However i feel that this type of film create an empathy with the characters and show that life can be hard for them and we should take into consideration what happens.

Both of these film posters show the main characters within the film. It shows them in normal everyday clothes, this makes the characters seem real. Both of the posters show that the characters are not having a good time of and it is showing some emotional turmoil.
Social realism films often are about crime, drugs, violence, alcohol and smoking. It often represents working class life in a negative way, but it shows the reality of living in working class areas and having working class lifestyle. We have chosen this genre as we are able to relate to working class life in some way. We can also relate to being young in today's society. Within our film trailer we will try and show our own interpretations of life today for young people.
The characters within social realism films are usually having a bad time of it and they are having problems that they have to sort through. The reason audiences like this genre of films is because they feel they are able to relate to the different aspects and situations of their life's.
The setting of a social realism film is usually in the city in a run down working class estate, it shows the house in which they live and the background that the characters have came from. It is usually a place of poverty. The props that are used are often weapons, money, drugs and other materialistic items. When producing my trailer i will ensure that i will use the setting effectively, by using long shots of the area to set the scene.

Analysis of trailers: High school musical 3

The second trailer that i am going to analyse is High school musical. The reason i have chosen to analyse this particular film trailer for my research is because it also represents teenagers. However it represents them i a positive way, instead of a negative way.
The micro feature show a lively happy mood which is created by the mise en scene, sound, lighting and editing. The editing used are quick fades this builds up excitement which is parrell to the trailer. A montage of images flow along to the quick pace fades which portrays the narrative and genre of the film. This helps the audience to have an insight to what the film is about. The genre of the film is also gave away in the title, as it is called high school musical. Primary colours are used in the trailer this shows a brightness and innocence about the film as it is a film for a young age. High key lighting is used this gives a uplifting feeling.

The Macro features show a range of locations, this shows a range of settings are used within the film. There are many songs and singing in the trailer this shows that it is a musical. The narrative shows a happy upbeat high school. Which is often a portrayal of the Americans portrayed by the media. In this trailer there were 83 edits, this is important as the edits set the pace and build up the excitement and motivation to go and watch the film.

The target audience for this film are typically tweens 11-16. This is because it is all about young teenagers within a school. It would also be typically aimed at girls as the film shows a love story. The film portrays teenagers in America in a positive light, whereas the connotation of British teenagers in British films is usually negative.

Analysis of trailers: Kidulthood

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mdoKD4gTQ2c
The first film trailer I am going to analyse is Kidulthood. The reason why I am going to this is to help me when i produce my tralier. Kidulthood is a good tralier to analyse as it has the same genre as what mine is going to be, which is a social realism film with a gangsta hybrid. The trailer starts with the production team logo which is revolver entertainment and then fades to the name of the film Kidulthood. It is written in white capital letters however the i is written in small case letters this may indicate the youthfulness of the characters in film even though it is hard to remember they are kids at times due to the lifestyle they lead. The non- digetic music starts from the beginning of the trailer. It then shows a DJ deck and cuts fast to different people within the film. Then sets the scene with an establishing shot of the area, The main character is then shown in a hoody walking down the street. The other main character is then shown in a hoody. A shot is then shown of someone walking but it is from the point of view of under the characters feet. The main character is then shown again smoking and then some is shown walking from behind but upside down. The music builds more and one of the main characters is shown swinging a bat and there is screaming in the background. A quick cut is shown its almost a flash of a girls face. This makes you feel that the girl is going to be hit by the bat. A rapper is then shown who is singing the track that is being played so at this point this is digetic music. It then cuts to three males in a car getting all excited. It then cuts to a bag of cannabis on the table, There is then a cut to a bag of cocaine, it then cuts to a bag of pills being put on the table. This is to show that the characters in the film take drugs. There is a quick cut to a girl and then cuts to another girl smoking cannabis. There is then a cut to someone taking alcohol off a shelf in a shop. A girl is then shown robbing a bottle of alcohol and hides it behind her coat. This shows that the characters in the film drink. Lots of different parts of the film are shown but it keeps cutting back to the singer rapping. A towel is shown and wrapped in it is a gun. It then cuts to a male character in a car being handed a gun. This shows that the characters in the film are involved with gun crime. It then cuts to the male character being handed alot of money, this shows that they are probably motivated by money. We then see the girls taking drugs by sniffing cocaine. We then see someone get punched this may show violence. Throughout the trailer we are shown the different things that will be involved in the film such as violence, crime, drug use, swearing. Towards the end of the trailer the edits have a faster pace. Between some of the clips words are wrote saying 'Before adulthood comes' 'Kidulthood' this shows you the catch line for the film. At the very end of the trailer we are told the date that the film will be released this is a very important as after the trailer has made the film appealing to an audience they are then told when they are able to watch it.

Film Magazine covers.

The first Magazine cover I am going to look at is the cover for Entertainment. I can identify this as the word entertainment is on the cover in big bold blue writitng. This is so everyone can see and attracts the attention of the reader. Another thing that the cover includes is a photo of two main characters within the film new moon which is part of the twighlight saga. The facial expressions of these two actors are very serious as if they are in character for the photo. The characters Bella and Jacob also are made to look 3D as Jacobs head is infront some of the Title of the magazine. (entertainment). This makes the magazine cover stand out alot and makes it attracting to the eye. Therefore readers will buy it. In the bottom left had conner the film New Moon is mentioned in bright white bold text. In the bottom right hand conner is other things that will be in the magazine, in this case in bold yellow, white and red writing it says "All The Buzz On 112 Fall Movies.' It also has pictures underneath this text to attract the readers attention. The colours on the magazine cover are very bright and attracting to the eye.

The second magazine cover I will be analysing is the magazine cover for Empire. I am able to indentify this as it is the title at the top in bold , upper case, red writitng. The font is also quite unique this is something that will stand out the reader alot. The image on this magazine cover is of the character Harry potter which is very popular, so this will attract a wide audience. However the image doesn't seem as important on this cover as it does on the one for Entertainment as the text stands out alot more and the image looks like it is in the background. Another reason why the title Empire stands out so much is because it is such a bright colour and the image is really dull and dark. The other text also isn't that bright because it is yellow and white. On the left hand side in small writting it says ' 45 new movies you need to know about and right now!'. This is not very visible as it in a small text. The text underneath that is more visible is the names on the new movies such as Harry Potter, Star Trek, Green Zone. The reason that this is in much bigger font than the other text is the audience will be attracted to the magazine just by seeing the names of the films. Below that is a another image which is mixed images from the different films that the magazine will talk about. In the right hand conner is the bar code. Above that is more text which says something about the image and mentions Harry Potter to relate to the image.
